Why should Managers and Executives pay attention to non-engaged employees and the psychological recession? What people do is largely determined by how they feel. Too many people are being affected by the widespread Psychological Recession, which is the depressed and anxious feeling that the present is no good and the future will be even more catastrophic. Making it worse, you feel you’re hanging from a tree limb in a cold wind and no one cares. To a large extent, these feelings stem from employees’ feelings that they are no longer stakeholders in the companies they work for, with the predictable result that anxiety and stress dominate the workplace. <!--more-->
The American Management Association conducted a survey of companies that had reduced payroll, and reported that only 45 percent of those companies had profited from those actions even within the first year. In sharp contrast, the share price of organizations in which employees feel their employer really cares about them and they reciprocate with a strong desire and are deeply motivated to perform at their best are two to three times higher than those of a comparison group. It’s really common sense—as well as the golden rule—when we respect and like our bosses and feel we’re respected and liked in return, we work harder and better. Then, the odds are really good that the company is a success. |

While it's no surprise that
While it's no surprise that people's focus goes from "eyes up" on the horizon with optimism, confidence and the willingness to take risks in a boom economy ... to "eyes down" with fear, worry and an attitude of "self-preservation" in a bust cycle.
The effects of a "psychological recession" or "emotional recession" are contagious, from manager/leader to everyone around him or her. Leaders, like bronc busters or bull riders MUST keep their eyes UP and choose their focus to stay in the saddle for the longest 8 seconds of their life.
Because if you are on the back of a thousand pound animal you really can't control ... you do what you can do to ride it out ... sit deep, hold on and keep your eyes up! If you look down, you might as well just be pick your spot in the dirt, because that's exactly where you will end up.
This is the time to remember, re-define and re-focus on your core values and the core values of your company and walk the talk.
